Xabregas Artisan Syrah 2009

I have no issues with this wine being labelled a Syrah. That’s what it is. It’s different, even to other good Great Southern Shiraz. It has a Rhône/Hawkes Bay heart, but with Great Southern skin and bones. For something different, the wine is cofermented with whole bunch Roussanne (instead of the more commonly used Viognier). Sexy labelling too. I love the pewter typewriter font over the black and grey.

This has been open for 48 hours, and there’s absolutely no sign of oxidation or tiredness. Blueberry, dark cherries and meaty pan juices amongst a cloud of white pepper. The tannins are very grippy and almost unexpected. They contribute a lot to the wine, both now and potentially. I wouldn’t have guessed the Roussanne influence, but it, in combination with oak, adds some brazil nut complexity. To top it all off, there’s notable length. Cellar some.

A truly exciting, masterfully made wine. One of the best examples of Shiraz/Syrah that I’ve had in a while. A wine for beef fillet.

Outstanding
